The release of the HDMI 2.1 specification in 2017 saw the data rate ceiling lift from 18 Gbps to a blistering 48 Gbps, unlocking a plethora of new capabilities including 8K video with dynamic HDR, high and variable frame rates, optimized gaming modes, and clever link training that can establish supportable link speeds to aid in reliable installations. The latest specification update is version 2.1a, which added more HDR video features for optimized performance. But what does this all mean for system designers and integrators in terms of system design and compatibility?
