Smart Home Essentials - February 2026

CEDIA developed the Smart Home Essentials pathway to provide entry-level home automation technicians with knowledge in cabling infrastructure and equipment mounting. This pathway will provide a solid foundation for new hires, career changers and those interested in advancing their career in the industry. It also supports individuals on their way to CEDIA certification.

During this three-day package, students will learn the fundamental science behind electronic cabling, best practices for cable termination and installation, plus learn the basic testing and qualification methods for structured cabling. You will also learn, and practice, the key techniques required to correctly plan and install equipment racks, plus the fundamentals of audio, video, signal modulation and packet data are also covered.

During the individual courses, CEDIA certified subject matter expert, Geoff Meads, will share a vast amount of technical knowledge and will be on hand to support students through their learning. Across the three days, attendees will take part in numerous hands-on activities, designed to deliver a good feel for the on-the-job tasks typically undertaken by new technicians.

- Technicians preparing for CEDIA's CIT and IST certifications.

- Triangles, percentage and ratios calculations
- Working with electrical formula
- Basics of audio and video signals
- Baseband signals, modulation and packet data
- Cable termination
- Cable lacing
- Testing and troubleshooting cables

- Equipment installation within racks
