Smart home and AV systems are inherently complex, requiring good design for the best performance, user experience, and reliability outcomes. And the bedrock of good design is thorough, professional documentation. When done well, it communicates every detail of project planning and expectations to all stakeholders including the client, adjacent professions and trades, and of course the integrator's own team. The best way to implement consistency and interpretability is to use standards-based symbology on design diagrams and drawings, and that means being familiar with and applying the ANSI-J-STD-710 standard.
This white paper explores the importance of design documentation, the types of documents — especially diagrams and drawings — and an overview of the "J standard" and its attributes.
